Individuals can access the internet by dial-up or broadband connection. Early 21st Century, people in USA were accessing internet by dial-up, while businesses were accessing using higher speed connection. Although both types of access use a modem, which converts the digital data of the computer into an analogue data for transmission over the telephone system the dial-up declined in favor of broadband access.
Accessing the internet in the USA differs from state to state. For example, in the U.S. overall in 2011, 77.9% of the population used the Internet. However, in that same year (2011), there was a large gap in usage between Washington (80.0%), New Hampshire (79.8%), Minnesota (79.0%) and Mississippi (59.0%). The rural areas of the Mississippi State that are surrounded by mountains and forests have problems with the information and communication technology infrastructure. Therefore, this lack of Internet access is, once again, because of the location. Moreover, Dial-up is often the only form of Internet access available in rural areas because it requires no infrastructure other than the already existing telephone network. Countries say near the south or north pole would find it extremely difficult to have access to technology because the geographical conditions are not suitable for information and communication technology infrastructure. So, the geographical condition of the country plays a key role in the digital divide worldwide.
