conclusion
The information age is now upon us. Today, technology can be found in every aspect of our lives whether it was education, health, shopping, banking, crime prevention, communication or many others. What distinguishes the information age from other periods in human history is its capability of transferring or sharing information between people really quickly. Also the information age enables people to transfer or share information in form of videos or images. The technical devices or applications used has impacted the information age immensely both positively and negatively.
Positive impacts:
ICT’s impacts on the information age are endless. since this is the case, I will cover, briefly, some of ICT’s positive impact. ICT has taken the educational process way a head since it allows students to interact with technology and learn something new. ICT minimizes teacher’s work since it helps the student understand for example, 3D modelling softwares allow students to view a 3D animation of a heart and rotate it.
Another impact is that ICT have improved communication and connectivity between people in the information age. This is because ICT devices allow people to communicate faster over the internet for free, or video chat, or call each other using a mobile phone from any where and at ant time. They don’t need to travel to the receiver of the message. I can chat with my sister in India without actually travelling to her.
In addition to communication, ICT has helped organizations whether they are business or banks to connect with their customers, increase customer awareness and cut costs. Online shopping and banking have played a significant role since they encourage customers to conduct transactions or shop without the need to physically travel.
Entertainment has enhanced hugely in the in formation age with all these ICT devices and applications available to us. We can share electronic books with our friends and family, or we can share photos and documents of trips we have been on so others can view and enjoy. Also we can be video games with others from different parts of the world from our homes. Business can also make their advertisements or announcements fun and entertaining by podcasting it with catchy music or with a short scene.
Since crime is a big issue that all periods of human history face, ICT has helped minimize the chances for criminals to rob, or access authorised areas and so on. There are advanced cameras called CCTV cameras that are like a third eye for businesses, banks and other organization. If a store has been robed, the employees can catch the criminal by viewing the footage of the CCTV. Also authorised people can be allowed access to certain areas by identifying their car number or physical characteristic automatically.
Negative impact:
ICT has a mixed blessing on the information. Despite the privileges that we are living in, ICT has negatively impacted the information age. New generations are losing their face to face communication skills because they feel more comfortable communicating over the internet, video chatting, text messaging or calling through mobile/landline phones. People now are reluctant to speak on public, or to sit together as a family or as friends; even if they are in the same room they will still communicate using their electronic devices.
Another major problem businesses, banks and individuals are facing, that is caused by ICT is scamming, identity theft, phishing and hackers. In the information age, it is very difficult to distinguish between fraud websites and real online shopping/banking websites. Many people have lost their life saving because hackers got access to their bank accounts through online shopping/banking websites.
Yes, it is good to have fun and relax very once in a while, but the entertainments like game consoles, DVDs and radios suck up valuable time without you realising it. The problem with ICT is that it is a big distraction. People are playing video games, watching TV and listening to music for numerous hours instead of working, studying, hanging out with their friends and family or doing chores.
ICT has played a key role in maintaining the security of homes, organization and businesses, but there are hidden costs behind all these high tech-security devices/applications. These devices/applications are very expensive, they require regular maintenance and they require frequent replacing. All these factors add to the cost of installing security devices/applications.
Education is also negatively affected by technology. Students are becoming less independent and are relaying on technology like 3D modelling softwares to study instead of experimenting and observing the topic. Also, students tend to use calculators to solve mathematical questions instead of using and applying their knowledge.
Overall:
The information age is the age of technology and transfer of information; it is a sea of endless conveniences and ease. We are very privileged in the information age since all our everyday tasks can be done more efficiently. Technology helps us by speeding the process and allowing us to multitask. In addition to this, it helps us connect with the people worldwide and it bridges cultures and communities together. Today, you can know about the Syrian refugee crisis from twitter (social media) and lend a hand to help them by donating money using online websites. Nonetheless, technology is threating the information age with all these security issues and health risks. The rays emitted by these devices cause harm to our body. Likewise sitting in front of these screens causes obesity. In the long run, technology has been a huge help in the information age by making tasks simple, fast and efficient.
